| PROJECT DESCRIPTION |
|
Auwahi Wind Energy is a 21-megawatt (MW) wind farm located on Maui, Hawaii, that is scheduled to begin operations in 2012. An important component of the project is a battery unit that can store as much as 10 megawatt-hours (MWh) of wind energy generated by the project’s windmills. This battery will be utilized to smooth fluctuations in power delivery caused by the intermittent nature of wind resources and provide a valuable source of grid stability. The integrated wind and battery energy storage project could serve as a prototype to help maximize the energy output of other wind power projects in Hawaii and throughout the world. The project would help Maui attain its goal of achieving 95 percent of its electricity from renewable sources by 2020. |
